QUEEN MOTHER PERTEVNİYAL

(1810-1883)
II. Mahmud’s Wife,Sultan Abdülaziz’s Mother

As of the beginning of the 19th century, the dress fashion of the Ottoman Palace began to change. In keeping with the changing fashion taste of the ladies of the Harem, three- and four-gored skirts became a more common part of the dresses. The queen mother’s three-gored dress was prepared as a replica of the three-gored dress samples on exhibit at the Topkapi Palace and Sadberk Hanım museums. The edges of the inner robe were decorated with scalloped edges used on the original samples. The headgear, comprised of a jeweled belt placed over a small round cap, reflects the fashion of the period.
